The Romanian people declares the Mr. Mark Gittenstein, the US Ambassador in Romania, "persona non grata"

Your Excellencies,

The Ambassador of the United States of America in Romania, Mr. Mark Gittenstein, commented a few days ago, in relation with the popular protest movement ongoing in Bucharest and another 61 cities of our country since 2012, January 12/13, asking for more democracy and for the resignation of an administration involved in corruption and authoritarian deviations, that Romania made progress and the Romanian protesters should be happy they are not shot from the rooftops, and that they should look at Syria to see this happening. This position of the Ambassador of the United States, a country largely respected in Romania, is offensive for the following reasons:
1. In December 1989 over 1,000 Romanians were shot and killed while peacefully demonstrating and asking for freedom and democracy. Their sacrifice, as well as the sacrifice of the Resistence heroes before them, was not meant for Mr. Gittenstein to remark 22 years later that Romania made some progress compared to Syria, not killing opponents anymore, but it was meant for Romania to become a true democracy, in which the political power listens to the citizens and serves their interests.
2. Since 2007, January 1st Romania is a European Union member, and therefore to compare it with a brutal dictatorship such as Syria is, to say at least, ackward.
3. Since 2004 Romania is a full and loyal member of NATO, assisting with troops the US effort in Afghanistan and Iraq and incurring casualties. This is not something for which the US should feel gratitude toward an individual, even if this individual is the current President of Romania, Mr. Traian Basescu, but, Romania being a democracy, something which should trigger the respect of the US toward the entire people of Romania, including the protesters, which should not be ridiculed by the US Ambassador.
Therefore we, the signatory parties of this petition, as free members of the sovereign nation of Romania, inform you that we declare Mr. Mark Gittenstein, the Ambassador of the United States of America in Romania, as "persona non grata" and we politely ask you to recall him to Washington as a matter of urgency and appoint someone else, more informed, more competent and less biased, in his current position.
