There is currently a debate as to whether or not “transsexual” children as young as 11 years of age should be administered drugs which suppress puberty. These children are profoundly unhappy with the sex with which they were born and obsessed with the idea of living as the other sex. The Dutch team of Cohen-Kettenis and Goozen has already treated over 70 children with gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) blockers -- drugs that suppress puberty. They argue that once a “transsexual” child has passed through puberty, the characteristics of the unwanted sex are more difficult to disguise, even with hormones and cosmetic surgery. Therefore, since these children are on the path to “sexual reassignment surgery (SRS)” why not start earlier? Why not prevent puberty and allow the child to live as the other sex, and then, at age 16, begin administering hormones of the desired sex. At age 18 one can proceed with surgical alterations, including removal of the male or female sexual organs and the girls’ breasts, and creation of an artificial vagina and breast implants for the boys. The creation of pseudo male parts for girls is usually delayed since the plastic surgery for this operation is not yet perfected. Those recommending puberty-suppressing drugs insist that such drastic measures are the only means available to relieve the suffering of adolescents who believe they were “born in the wrong sex body.” When the surgical solution was seen as something to be avoided, most pre-adolescent children who believed they were or wanted to be the other sex eventually accepted the reality of the sex they were born with. Only a tiny percentage grew up to demand surgical alteration. Today, however, in places like the Netherlands, rather than trying to help these children accept their biological sexual identity, certain experts encourage parents and schools to allow the children to present themselves in public as the other sex. The very availability of these procedures convinces these adolescents that if they resist the therapist probing into the causes of their delusions and desires, if they keep insisting they were “born in the wrong body,” they will be allowed to access to hormones and surgery they desire and be able to live their fantasy. Some have opposed this course of action. Kenneth Zucker and Susan Bradley, experts in the treatment of children with sexual identity problems, argue that if treatment begins early and if the parents cooperate the problem can be resolved and the desire to be the other sex usually disappears. However, adolescents whose problems have not been addressed early are difficult to treat. According to Zucker and Bradley, “Seeking sex reassignment surgery is a defensive solution and a mechanism for control of anxiety.” (Gender Identity Disorder and Psychosexual Problems in Children and Adolescents, 1995) These adolescents resist working with therapists and demand an immediate transition. The question is: Should medical professionals give in to these demands? This debate ignores a more basic fact: In reality it is impossible for a person to change their sex. Our sex – male or female is written on every cell of our body. George Burou, a surgeon who performed over 700 SRS operations, admitted: “I don’t change men into women. I transform male genitals into genitals that have a female aspect. All the rest is in the patient’s mind.” It should be noted that there are a tiny number of people with genetic, hormonal and congenital disorders which may make determining sexual identity difficult, but those seeking surgical “change” are virtually all biologically normal males or females. There is no denying the suffering of those with such delusions or desires, but these are problems of the mind not the body. Not all Dutch therapists agree with SRS as the treatment of choice; one commented that “the scalpel should not be used to reconcile fantasy with reality”. Dr. Paul McHugh, who encouraged Johns Hopkins University to cease performing such operations, wrote: “We don’t do liposuction of anorexics. So why amputate the genitals of these patients.” Starting treatment at age 11 presents many problems. Is a child of that age able to give truly informed consent to the risks involved in numerous surgeries required, to the burden of life-long hormone treatments needed to sustain the illusion of the other sex, and to the permanent loss of the ability to have children? Those who have undergone these procedures often hide the fact that their birth sex is different from the one they are currently presenting from friends, employers, sexual partners, and even potential marital partners. They demand that birth certificates and other documents be changed and that they be allowed to marry a person of the same sex. Puberty does not just change the sexual organs; it also affects brain development, bone and muscle development. No one knows all the potential side effects of administering puberty-delaying hormones on children; it constitutes human experimentation. It is also possible that the desire for SRS is a symptom of other psychological problems, such as schizophrenia, personality, mood dissociative, and psychotic disorders. In one case reported in the American Journal of Psychiatry by Joost à Campo and associates, a man was administered female hormones for a number of years while awaiting SRS. These caused breast enlargement and atrophy of his genitals. Later he was correctly diagnosed with schizophrenia, administered proper drugs and his belief he was the other sex disappeared. He now deeply regrets the hormone treatment. The Dutch team Cohen-Kettenis and Goozen admit problems. In an article entitled “Sex Reassignment of Adolescents”, they write: “Relief of gender dysphoria, however, does not necessarily mean relief of unhappiness in general. For example, for the women desiring to be male ‘living as a man without a penis’ presents problems when showering after athletic activities and being frustrated because of the impossibility of having ‘real sex’ with one’s girl friend.” Persons who present themselves as the other sex, whether or not they have undergone surgical alteration, are demanding that others address them using the name and pronouns of their chosen sex rather than their birth sex. This presents real problems for those who don’t want to participate in this fantasy solution. The Catholic Church does not accept the claim of a sex change and will not allow alteration of baptismal records, marriage or ordination for those who have undergone such procedures. Many Evangelical churches have similar policies. There is opposition from radical feminists and lesbians, some of whom feel that a person who is born a man cannot really understand what it means to be a woman and object to the ways in which men who claim to be women stereotype female behavior. There are also feminist concerns about women who want to be men “going over to the enemy”. As a result, some feminist groups restrict admission to gatherings to “women born as women and living women”. Exploiting the gains made by gay activists, “trans” activists are pushing to have “gender identity” added to anti-discrimination legislation and want to make “transphobia” (the supposed irrational fear of persons presenting as the other sex) the equivalent of racism. It has become routine to link “Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans (gender or sexual) and Queer -- GLBTQ or LGBTQ -- together as sexual minorities who have a right to special treatment. Pushing vulnerable adolescents down the road to surgery will make it difficult for them to change their minds and avoid mutilating surgery. Since the term "discrimination" is often interpreted to mean words and views against homosexuality, what are the implications of that "study"? The "study" was led by the Brazilian socialist foundations Perseu Abramo and Rosa Luxemburgo, which polled how many Brazilians do not accept homosexuality. Perseu Abramo Foundation has connections to the Workers' Party, of President Lula. Taking advantage of the ideological echo of those foundations, the Lula administration will now use the results of that "study" to make more forceful policies against "homophobia". In the words of O Globo, the "study" indicated that "every three days of 2008, there was at least one hate crime related to sexual orientation in Brazil, according to the 'Brazil without Homophobia' federal program". Do crimes against those that practice homosexuality occur in Brazil? Of course. Declaring that most homosexuals killed are transvestites, Oswaldo Braga, president of the Movimento Gay de Minas, said, "They are homosexuals more involved in criminality, as prostitution and drug-trafficking, exposing them more to violence". (Tribuna de Minas, 09/03/2007, page 3.) Any Brazilian citizen, whether homosexual or not, who exposes himself in environments of drugs and prostitution runs the risk of suffering assaults and murder. Yet, murders, of any kind of citizen, are nothing new in the hyper-violent Brazil. In the last 25 years, while 800,000 Brazilians were murdered, only 2,000 homosexuals met the same end, according to the Grupo Gay da Bahia, the oldest gay militant group in Brazil. However, the "study" did not mention directly murders of homosexuals, but only "crimes". While every three days 414 Brazilians are murdered — not mentioning other crimes —, every three days only one crime is committed against homosexuals. No, the Lula administration is not looking at the sky-rocketing number of 414 murders. Its eyes are focused on the one crime against homosexuals every three days. That one crime can be any "crime" — even people annoyed by two men openly and brazenly kissing one another. The Lula administration's eyes are also on the "discrimination" of the 99% Brazilians. To eradicate "intolerance" against homosexuality is much more important than working to save the lives of 50,000 Brazilians murdered yearly in hyper-violent Brazil. So much violence in Brazil is no wonder. Life lost its value under an administration that, instead of protecting its citizens, works to legalize abortion and make homosexuality a sacred right. What is surprising is how a population that is 99% against homosexuality is accepting passively that its 100% pro-homosexuality government is lifting the homosexual acts to the level of inviolable sacredness, and at the same time it is lowering 99% Brazilians to the class of "ignorant mob" that should be forcefully condemned to state policies of reeducation. Such socialist action demands, as always, media support. No one better than the big Brazilian media to help the government to reeducate 99% of the Brazilian population. According to the BBC in Portuguese, soap operas of TV Globo — which is connected to the O Globo newspaper — increased the number of divorces in Brazil in the last 40 years. Is it possible now to increase the number of people accepting homosexuality? With the assistance of Globo and other liberal TV channels, the "ignorant" people will be reeducated to see homosexuality according to the politically-correct trends. Not mentioning that, using public schools and other means, the federal program "Brazil without Homophobia" will spare no measure to eliminate "discrimination" of Brazilian citizens. While the Brazilian Department of Health has spent 15 million dollars in lubricants so that homosexuals may be occupied and entertained in their carnal relations, 99% of the population will be "occupied" being chased and reeducated for "discrimination". That "discrimination", as the Lula administration and Brazilian media define, comprehends any view contrary to homosexuality. It makes no difference what 99% of the Brazilian population think, it makes no difference what 99% Christians believe — the program "Brazil without Homophobia" is determined to "heal" them, according to the words of Lula himself, from their "perverse disease". Staff members for the Washington, D.C.-based Christian Family Research Council, which organized the event, estimated the crowd at close to 1,000. Those in attendance were there to show their opposition to two bills that would legalize same-sex marriages in Maine. Rep. Dennis Damon, D-Trenton, has proposed legislation that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman. And a bill introduced by Rep. Leslie Fossel, R-Alna, would give same-sex couples the same legal rights and benefits as married couples. Neither bill has been printed, but they are expected to be referred to the Judiciary Committee. The Stand for Marriage Rally comes at a time of stepped-up lobbying for and against a gay- marriage bills. Cathy Fletcher, 56, of Dixfield, a retired mail carrier, said she is against the bills and came to the rally to support traditional marriage. "I want to learn more about what can be done and how I can help," Fletcher said. Marta Sisco, 56, a homemaker from St. George, said she believes marriage is actually instituted by God. "It's largely about the family," Sisco said. "It's his intent to save us as families and that children are entitled to be born in families that have a mom and a dad." The 92% of Brazilians who agreed partially or completely with the statement were labeled "homophobic." Another test question for "homophobia" was, "Homosexuality is a sin against the laws of God." Fifty-eight percent of Brazilians agreed. Those who agreed partially or completely that "Homosexuality is an illness that should be treated" (41%) were also labeled "homophobic," as were those who objected to homosexuals kissing and hugging in public (64%). According to O Globo, Brazil's federal government will use the data "to plan new policies, and warns that it has now detected a dark consequence of so much prejudice: intolerance." The study was performed by an organization linked to the socialist Labor Party, which currently occupies the nation's executive branch and predominates in the legislature. "There's no way [for the government] not to involve itself, because intolerance must manifest itself in crimes, including crimes committed by agents of the government," said Paulo Biagi, coordinator of the government's official "Brazil Without Homophobia" campaign. Biagi says that the government will now begin to "rearticulate" the case for its proposed "anti-homophobia" law, which would make it illegal to criticize homosexual behavior in Brazil. "These men were sexually harassed in clear violation of San Diego's sexual harassment code," LiMandri said. "Further, the California Constitution's freedom of speech provision prohibits compelled speech. What the firefighters were ordered to do was endorse what goes on at this parade through their participation in it." The case detailed how the firefighters were sexually harassed through lewd cat calls and obscene gestures at the event, which was replete with sexual displays and graphic images. The men then suffered harassment and retaliation after complaining to superiors, the complaint said. "Many people may mistakenly think the 'gay pride' parade is merely a 'fun' event," said ADF Senior Counsel Joe Infranco, who is co-counsel in the case. "They never would have imagined the crude sexual harassment these firefighters were forced to endure. But in truth, the goal of homosexual behavior advocates is to undermine society's long-held values. They continue to seek this, whether by demanding participation in 'gay pride' parades or by trampling the democratic process to redefine marriage." Following the launch of the lawsuit, the city changed its fire department policy so firefighters no longer will be forced to participate in the promotion. The "Resolution on Appropriate Affirmative Responses to Sexual Orientation Distress and Change Efforts" also advises that parents, guardians, young people and their families avoid sexual orientation treatments that portray homosexuality as a mental illness or developmental disorder and instead seek psychotherapy, social support and educational services "that provide accurate information on sexual orientation and sexuality, increase family and school support and reduce rejection of sexual minority youth." The approval, by APA's governing Council of Representatives, came at APA's annual convention, during which a task force presented a report that in part examined the efficacy of so-called "reparative therapy," or sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE). "Contrary to claims of sexual orientation change advocates and practitioners, there is insufficient evidence to support the use of psychological interventions to change sexual orientation," said Judith M. Glassgold, PsyD, chair of the task force. "Scientifically rigorous older studies in this area found that sexual orientation was unlikely to change due to efforts designed for this purpose. Contrary to the claims of SOCE practitioners and advocates, recent research studies do not provide evidence of sexual orientation change as the research methods are inadequate to determine the effectiveness of these interventions." Glassgold added: "At most, certain studies suggested that some individuals learned how to ignore or not act on their homosexual attractions. Yet, these studies did not indicate for whom this was possible, how long it lasted or its long-term mental health effects. Also, this result was much less likely to be true for people who started out only attracted to people of the same sex." Based on this review, the task force recommended that mental health professionals avoid misrepresenting the efficacy of sexual orientation change efforts when providing assistance to people distressed about their own or others' sexual orientation. APA appointed the six-member Task Force on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation in 2007 to review and update APA's 1997 resolution, "Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation," and to generate a report. APA was concerned about ongoing efforts to promote the notion that sexual orientation can be changed through psychotherapy or approaches that mischaracterize homosexuality as a mental disorder. The task force examined the peer-reviewed journal articles in English from 1960 to 2007, which included 83 studies. Most of the studies were conducted before 1978, and only a few had been conducted in the last 10 years. The group also reviewed the recent literature on the psychology of sexual orientation. "Unfortunately, much of the research in the area of sexual orientation change contains serious design flaws," Glassgold said. "Few studies could be considered methodologically sound and none systematically evaluated potential harms." As to the issue of possible harm, the task force was unable to reach any conclusion regarding the efficacy or safety of any of the recent studies of SOCE: "There are no methodologically sound studies of recent SOCE that would enable the task force to make a definitive statement about whether or not recent SOCE is safe or harmful and for whom," according to the report. "Without such information, psychologists cannot predict the impact of these treatments and need to be very cautious, given that some qualitative research suggests the potential for harm," Glassgold said. "Practitioners can assist clients through therapies that do not attempt to change sexual orientation, but rather involve acceptance, support and identity exploration and development without imposing a specific identity outcome." As part of its report, the task force identified that some clients seeking to change their sexual orientation may be in distress because of a conflict between their sexual orientation and religious beliefs. The task force recommended that licensed mental health care providers treating such clients help them "explore possible life paths that address the reality of their sexual orientation, reduce the stigma associated with homosexuality, respect the client's religious beliefs, and consider possibilities for a religiously and spiritually meaningful and rewarding life." "In other words," Glassgold said, "we recommend that psychologists be completely honest about the likelihood of sexual orientation change, and that they help clients explore their assumptions and goals with respect to both religion and sexuality."
